DREAMCATCHER PRESENTS NEW JERSEY PREMIERE OF TIMELY COMEDY, “THE GREAT GOD MONEY”

DREAMCATCHER REPERTORY THEATRE, professional Theatre in Residence at the Baird Center in South Orange, will present the New Jersey premiere of Emily Davis’s THE GREAT GOD MONEY from March 6 through March 22. This fantastical comedy with music was first performed in the New York Fringe Festival in 2005, when NYTheatre.com called the play “a witty and quirky musical comedy.” Emily Davis, playwright and director, is the Artistic Director of the Messenger Theatre company of New York, who created this piece as an ensemble through a process called ‘devising,’ which includes audience questionnaires and improvisation during rehearsals to arrive at a final script.

In THE GREAT GOD MONEY, Dot is an ordinary person who believes that more money would solve all of her problems. One day, after a series of seemingly coincidental disasters, she finds herself on a Wizard of Oz-like journey through the bizarre and colorful Land of Money. Along the way, she meets many unusual characters who offer mostly conflicting advice about how to find the Great God Money. As Dot’s adventure progresses, she comes across the Land of Extreme Gender Roles, Comfortville, and the Hall of History, where she learns the origin of today’s money system in a nutshell: livestock, shells, coins, paper money. The original production’s reviews called the show “crisp, smart, and amusing”, and its issues are now more relevant than ever.

Dreamcatcher’s cast features Resident Acting Company members Harry Patrick Christian (Montclair), Laura Ekstrand (Livingston), Noreen Farley (Clinton), Scott McGowan (Maplewood), David Miceli (NYC), and Janet Sales (Montclair). Completing the cast is Jessica O’Hara-Baker (NYC), appearing for the first time with Dreamcatcher. Directing is Emily Davis (NYC), who will be assisted by stage manager Lauren McLoughlin (Maplewood).

Dreamcatcher is hosting several special programs throughout the run of the play, including a Talkback on the themes of the play with a guest professional after every Sunday matinee performance, sponsored by the New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s Stages Festival. Also through this program, a free student ticket is available with every purchase of a $25 adult ticket at the matinees. As always, Assistive Listening devices for the hearing impaired and advance large print scripts are available by prior arrangement, and an Open Captioned performance during the run is TBA. For more information about any of these special programs, please visit www.dreamcatcherrep.org.

THE GREAT GOD MONEY will run at Dreamcatcher from Friday, March 6 through Sunday, March 22. Performances are Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 general admission, $20 for seniors, and $15 for students, with special rates for subscribers and groups. Students pay only $10 on First Friday, March 6, and seniors pay only $10 on Senior Sunday, the March 8 matinee. Performances are at The Baird, located at 5 Mead Street in Meadowland Park, a few blocks from the center of downtown South Orange.
